Byron Upshaw

Byron E. Upshaw, MSPH, MS (he/him) is a Queer, Indigenous (Diné), and Black scholar and PhD student in Health Behavior Health Promotion program at the University of Arizona. His interdisciplinary research integrates public health, psychology, and social sciences to examine body image and the development of culturally responsive psychometric tools for underexplored and underrepresented communities. By combining mixed-methods approaches with a focus on community engagement, he seeks to advance measurement strategies that reflect the diverse health experiences of sexual, gender, and racially diverse individuals.
With expertise in epidemiology, Indigenous health, and behavioral research, Byron contributes to multiple health equity initiatives addressing the intersections of identity, health, and structural inequities. His work is grounded in community collaboration and culturally relevant methodologies, ensuring that health research and interventions reflect the lived experiences and needs of the populations they aim to serve. As an educator, he teaches and mentors students in public health, reinforcing the importance of culturally informed research methods that center the voices of historically excluded communities.
